Responding to the Need

Inspired by the critical need for values-based education, Rose Schaffer and Bernadette Vetter founded The Center for Learning in 1970 to empower teachers to provide the total educational experience-social, intellectual, and moral development of youth.

Believing in values-based education, The Sisters of the Humility of Mary and an ecumenical group of business and professional leaders from Ohio and Pennsylvania sponsored The Center for Learning. The donated time and expertise of these cofounders included the legal services of Atty. Myron J. Nadler, Youngstown, Ohio; the solid banking practices of Charles Foley and Harold VanHuffel, Warren, Ohio; the expertise of L. C. Michelon, President, Republic Education Institute, Cleveland, Ohio; the support and enthusiasm of Rose Ambrosia who led the Pennsylvania representatives; and the sustaining leadership of trustees and officers.

Rose Ambrosia

The expansion of The Center for Learning's mission into the arena of teacher training and enrichment was made possible through the establishment of an Endowment Fund in 1990 by the Board of Trustees. The Center is also actively recruiting area representatives to help facilitate teacher networking.
