Discipleship characterizes the change of lifestyle that occurs as people recognize God's presence in other people, places, and events of their lives. The six sessions in this unit address the baptismal call to discipleship through evangelization and the experiences of Christian initiation and ministry. Mature discipleship is not achieved overnight. The process of growth is often slow and gradual. Conversion is lifelong. This resource is designed to help participants explore the process that leads to a deeper awareness of God’s presence and to respond as disciples of Jesus. Community experiences, those of both the institutional church and the larger world, are examined to determine their influence on personal lifestyle. The impact made by individual choice is considered a key element in making the journey of discipleship.

Session titles are as follows: The Spiritual Journey; The Challenge of Discipleship; Qualities of Discipleship; The Church--A Community of Disciples; Discipleship in Our World; and Discipleship and Justice.

Activities:

Each session begins with a suggested method for lectionary prayer and ends with a closing prayer that may include reciting the Lord’s Prayer, reflecting on a scriptural passage, participating in a brief prayer service, or sharing prayer intentions and a sign of peace. Sessions include presentations of pertinent information, periods of personal reflection, and discussions for both large and small groups.
